چکیده

This paper presents improved collision attacks on roundreduced variants of the hash function CubeHash, one of the SHA-3 second round candidates. We apply two methods for finding linear differential trails that lead to lower estimated attack complexities when used within the framework introduced by Brier, Khazaei, Meier and Peyrin at ASIACRYPT 2009. The first method yields trails that are relatively dense at the beginning and sparse towards the end. In combination with the condition function concept, such trails lead to much faster collision attacks. We demonstrate this by providing a real collision for CubeHash-5/96. The second method randomizes the search for highly probable linear differential trails and leads to significantly better attacks for up to eight rounds.

Synthetic Linear Analysis: Improved Attacks on CubeHash and Rabbit

It has been considered most important and difficult to analyze the bias and find a large bias regarding the security of cryptosystems, since the invention of linear cryptanalysis. The demonstration of a large bias will usually imply that the target crypto-system is not strong. Regarding the bias analysis, researchers often focus on a theoretical solution for a specific problem. In this paper, w...

Linearization Framework for Collision Attacks: Application to CubeHash and MD6 (Extended Version)

In this paper, an improved differential cryptanalysis framework for finding collisions in hash functions is provided. Its principle is based on linearization of compression functions in order to find low weight differential characteristics as initiated by Chabaud and Joux. This is formalized and refined however in several ways: for the problem of finding a conforming message pair whose differen...

Inside the Hypercube

Bernstein’s CubeHash is a hash function family that includes four functions submitted to the NIST Hash Competition. A CubeHash function is parametrized by a number of rounds r, a block byte size b, and a digest bit length h (the compression function makes r rounds, while the finalization function makes 10r rounds). The 1024-bit internal state of CubeHash is represented as a five-dimensional hyp...

Symmetric States and their Structure: Improved Analysis of CubeHash

This paper provides three improvements over previous work on analyzing CubeHash, based on its classes of symmetric states: (1) We present a detailed analysis of the hierarchy of symmetry classes. (2) We point out some flaws in previously claimed attacks which tried to exploit the symmetry classes. (3) We present and analyze new multicollision and preimage attacks. For the default parameter sett...
